Top Ten {Tuesday}: 10 Books We’re Reading For School

I’m so excited to have finally rejoined the land of the Top Ten {Tuesday}. One of my favorite posts of the week has been neglected, because well….most of my posts have been neglected. I had a long custody battle that took me out of town for 3 months, and when I came back we all got hit with summer colds. Plus my 4 month old has been working on teething for a month now, and apparently is pushing out 2-3 teeth at one time. Poor baby. Poor mama. So without further ado, please join  me in linking up at OhAmanda’s slice of the world.
Top Ten {Tuesday}

I finally got to bring my beloved Jewel home last week. We were able to start homeschool. She’s in kindergarten, but she doesn’t appear to have been given a solid preschool foundation. She’s got her alphabet down beautifully, but she struggles a bit on her numbers. She’s not crazy about having to go over numbers again & again, but what we both enjoy, is reading time. Here’s the books we’re reading this year!

1. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
She’ll get a little bit of surprise when we read it. She’s never heard of the book, but she’s seen the movie. I’ve never seen the movie, but I definitely enjoyed the book as a child. For anyone who’s read the book, you know it’s a liiiitle bit different from the movie. I think she’ll like it though :)

2. Bringing The Rain to Kapiti Plain
This was one of my favorite books as a kid! My brothers loved it too….they were fond of mimicking Ki-Pat and how he stands one leg “like the great stork bird.”

3. Fox in Socks (Beginner Books)
Another children’s classic. This book is the one that prompted Gunlover to inform me that he’ll read to Jewel anytime, but he’s not to sure about that “Fox & Socks book”. It’s a tongue-twister, but then, that’s half the fun.

4. The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship: A Russian Tale
This is a Caldecott award winning book, that my library shamefully does not have. Which means I’ll need to add a book to my personally library. Gosh. That’s awful. *snicker*

5. The Story about Ping (Reading Railroad Books)
Having always loved China I adored this book as a child. It’s the story of a duck who lives on the Yangtze river. He sneaks away to avoid being the last one on the boat, and has many misadventures the next day in his attempts to rejoin his family.

6. Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day

Cover of
For any young child that feels like the whole world has conspired against them, this is the ultimate book. Nothing is going his way. He doesn’t get the cereal he wants, he’s forced to go to school, and his family is generally unfair. Or so he thinks.

7. Alexander and the Magic Mouse
Okay, the name Alexander reminded me of another lovely book. Coincidentally, the hero of the tale is from China. I really had forgotten that. Honest! He & his friends, who are all animal companions of an elderly lady (who lives in a gorgeous Victorian home) all set out to rescue to the town from a month long rain.

8. Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse
And the last book made me think of this one. This book is one of the Leo Lionni books, and it was a Caldecott Honor winner. This beautifully illustrated book teaches the lesson that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, even if it appears to be so.

9. Ferdinand the Bull and Other Children’s Folklore
The classic tale of a bull who would rather sniff flowers than fight. If you think I’m being silly, you need to read this book.

10. The High Rise Glorious Skittle Skat Roarious Sky Pie Angel Food Cake

This book is just plain awesome! It’s got fun, bright, colorful illustrations, and it has a charming conclusion. I had never heard of this book until Mom read it for school when I was 12-13.  Now I’m really excited to share it with my kids!
